kids and ordinary things

meet my niece, Ellie Layne, and her morning hair.

last night, my mom and i babysat her and her little brother, Lorenzo. or - "yenzo" as ellie likes to call him. ellie and i made cookies together last night for lots of kids that were coming over for "mormon movie night." she asked me about 100 times if it was time to put the "choc-whit chips" in and i kept asking her to be patient and that it wasn't time. it was very stressful making them with 35 teenagers swirling around us.

eventually, we finally got to "choc-whit chip" time and so i started videoing her for her parents (my brother and sister-in-law) cause i knew she would be excited. i asked her what she was doing. expecting her to say "making cookies!" i about died when her response was - "i'm being kind and patient." she sounded so grown up how she said it. i was really impressed but also startled because i realized how much she was paying attention.

she also wore my mom's glasses all around the house. it was hilarious. i wish so bad i had a picture.

this morning, i went upstairs to take over bathing her so my mom could finish feeding Lorenzo his bottle and she had black all over in her mouth and on her teeth. i later found out that the black was mascara that she thought was "wip stick."

it was amazing to me how ellie made the most ordinary things not so ordinary at all.

making chocolate chips, taking a bath, and getting ready in the morning are things i do every day. but with her, it felt like i was doing those things for the very first time.

kids are the best.
